Empty Bowls 2020

January 25, 2019 by Lauren Henderson in Events, Special Events

Book a one-on-one appointment to select your Empty Bowl at Good Shepherd Center

July 16, 2020

Dear Empty Bowl Ticket Holders,

The Empty Bowl 2020 Committee, as well as Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard and the Good Shepherd Center, cannot thank you enough for purchasing your Empty Bowl tickets and for your patience as we waited to see what COVID had in store for our area.

None of us could have imagined how helpful the purchase of an Empty Bowl ticket was going to be in the year 2020!

The 2020 Empty Bowl Event had already raised over $40,000 from online ticket sales and sponsors before the decision was made to postpone the event.  Mother Hubbard’s and Good Shepherd were quick to put that money to work mitigating the unexpected challenges COVID introduced to the communities we serve.  As you might have guessed, the numbers of those in need has increased significantly since March.

However, one good turn deserves another (get it, like on a pottery wheel?) and we plan to set up an event as early as possible after the first of the year for you to safely pick out a bowl to have and to hold.

And, because 2021 might seem like a long time away for many of you, we are also developing a system to use this fall that will allow a limited number of ticket holders to sign up for a time and place to safely pick out bowls. Stay tuned to our facebook (https://www.facebook.com/EmptyBowlsWilmingtonNC) for further information on how and when to sign up; we anticipate that there will be many dates from which to choose and the perfect amount of beautiful bowls over which to deliberate.

Sadly, there will be no delicious soup or bread this time around.  Please remember the generous Empty Bowl restaurants below when you are sick of cooking; they have also suffered due to the quarantine.  Perhaps you can order take out and enjoy it in your Empty Bowl bowl at home!

Please know that individually and collectively you have had a huge impact on fighting hunger and promoting well being in our community during these surreal times.  And, rest assured that your beautiful bowl will be patiently waiting for you!

The March 20, 2020 Empty Bowl Event has been postponed, but PLEASE HOLD ONTO THOSE TICKETS!  When things settle down and Wilmington gets back into the swing of things, the 2020 Empty Bowl Committee will reconvene to decide how to move forward.  If we are unable to fully reschedule the event for a later date,  our goal will be to arrange for ticket holders to have an opportunity to pick out one of the amazingly beautiful bowls our local artisans have donated to our local fight on hunger.

We are so grateful to those potters, our 2020 sponsors, the restaurants who committed to donating delicious soups, First Baptist Activities Center, our local ticket seller locations and all who had already purchased tickets.  We anticipate the need for emergency food, hot meals and shelter will increase over the next few weeks and that the logistics of providing these basic human needs will become exponentially more difficult; the money already raised for the 2020 Empty Bowl Event will have an even greater impact than in past years. You can still help by purchasing remaining tickets or donating online at emptybowlsilm.org.

Updated information about the 2020 Empty Bowls Event will be posted on emptybowlsilm.org and the Empty Bowls Wilmington Facebook page.
